This forum, as well as the Scottish War Memorials Project was set up on a forum hosting site. At the time this had the advantage of not requiring any initial financial setup.

This meant that we had no limits on the amount of photos, posts, threads, etc. There was literally no limit to the amount of information we could put online.

Recently, bizhat, the company that host the forum, introduced advertising banners to the top of the forums. These were initially for their own services, and were not too obtrusive. I felt at the time that we could live with them and it was a small price to pay since we had no charges to pay for running the forum.

Recently, however, I have noticed that the adverts have become larger, and more obtrusive. Some of them are for gambling sites, and I believe that there have been some for "singles" sites.

I'm not particularly in favour of having these banners in place now. I feel they would give a bad impression of the forum to any new visitors.

There is an option of paying a one-off fee, which would remove the banners completely from this forum. In total it would cost $20 to have them removed from both forums.

Therefore, I am making an appeal to the members of the forum. If you have gained information or found any of the information posted here useful, then please consider donating even a small sum to help keep the forum advert-free.

The amount required isn't too large in the overall scale of things, so we should be able to meet it easily.

I had hoped never to have to ask for donations for this forum, but in the circumstances I feel it is necessary. Let me make it plain that any funds raised will only go towards the removal of the banner advertisements. If there is any excess, I will donate this to Help For Heroes on behalf of the forum.

More information on Help For Heroes can be found here:

http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/

If you wish to donate via Paypal (which would be the easiest method) then send your donation to david_mcnay@btinternet.com

If you wish to donate by any other means then please send me an email or Private Message.

Thank you.

Hi David,

I couldn't agree more - drives me nuts.

It was irritating before, but now that there are more unsavoury ones appearing, you can definately count me in for a few bob.

Would the one single payment cover all 3 sites or would each one have to be paid separately?

Anne

(P.S. Have PM'd you regarding another matter)

Hello David,
The banners aren't a problem for me, to be honest I never look at them and they don't even register with me. However if the concensus is to get rid of them I'd be more than happy to contribute.
Cheers.
Jim

Like Jim, I don't even notice the banners - however, would be prepared to contribute to remove them if that was the Forum (or even just the Boss') consensus.

However, as I asked on our sister forum - is it a one-off $20 (ie about £10) payment?

Roxy

I'm pleased to announce that sufficient funds have been raised to remove the advertising banners from the website.

I think they have already been removed, but since I'm using some "Ad-blocking" software I was unable to see them anyway. Can someone confirm they are gone?

There is some surplus money left over, and if everyone is happy I will arrange a donation to Help For Heroes. I will do that in the next week or so as some people were sending cheques and I will wait for them to clear if that's OK.

My sincerest thanks to everyone who donated. You've done me (and the forum) proud.

David
