Norman Todd was one of five brothers from Wigtown who fought in World War One. At the outbreak of war Norman returned from India to enlist with the Middlesex Hussars. One of the brothers (George) was killed in action and is commemorated on Wigtown War Memorial and on the family headstone at Sheuchan cemetery. After the war Norman and his brother Arthur went to live in Australia but in the 1920s Norman checked out of his hotel and never contacted his family again. Recent research by his family found that he had died in Cooktown in 1980. As an aside, in 1910 Norman was responsible for the rescue of a friend who was drowning in Wigtown harbour; he was awarded for his bravery by the Royal Humane Society and the Carnegie Hero Award (copy of relevant pages below taken from the Roll of Honour at the Carnegie Museum in Dunfermline).
