The white square is a notice from North Lanarkshire Council that the gravestone is unsafe and should not be touched or moved. It is not a particularly high stone so it is not particularly dangerous.

It is also worth noting that the stone giveshis name as KEIR, and that someone has painted an S at the end to make KEIRS.

I may be guessing here, but the Bellshill area had at one time quite a Lithuanian community, and the spelling of his name on this grave leads me to believe he may have been Lithuanian or some other Eastern European nationality.

As you can see there are two stones in front of the CWGC stone. the small one does not relate to William Marshall. The second one has the same information as the CWGC stone with the exception of who it was erected by. The photos are quite hard to make out so I will provide a transcription.

"In Loving Memory of Dvr Wm Marshall, T/266566, who was killed in action 27th Feb 1943, aged 21(?) years. Erected by Neighbours and fellow workers of L.M.S. Bellshill. Also Officers, NCOs & Men, 118th Div Troop Coy, RASC."
